Gael Ltd, the UK market leader in the design, development and delivery of compliance management solutions, and ECRI Institute (Europe), a major international non-profit health services research organisation, will be hosting a free 1-hour webinar at 10am on Friday 19th June 2009 – Corporate Manslaughter Act – What are the implications for the NHS? The webinar will be an opportunity to find out what could expose a healthcare organisation to an investigation and possible prosecution under the Act, and what organisations can do to ensure compliance with the Act. After The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announcement on Friday 24th April 2009 that it is bringing the first charge in the UK under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, the implications for the healthcare sector are now very real. As outlined in the Act, a healthcare organisation will be guilty of corporate manslaughter if the way it manages or organises its activities causes a person's death, and amounts to a gross breach of the duty of care owed to that person. Almost all of a healthcare body's activities fall within the scope of the Act. ECRI Institute (Europe) will be represented by Stuart Emslie. Stuart is formerly Department of Health head of controls assurance for the NHS in England. He is an adviser to ECRI Institute (Europe) and a Visiting Fellow at Loughborough University Business School, where he developed and leads their postgraduate healthcare governance programme. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Healthcare Management, and is internationally regarded in the area of healthcare governance and risk management.
