Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust amalgamates quality management with Q-Pulse

An award-winning compliance management solution from a Scottish software developer is helping one of the UK’s largest NHS Trusts to support the management of quality across its pathology services.

Q-Pulse from Gael Ltd is supporting Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in maintaining and improving their quality management system (QMS) within their Clinical Pathology department.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust provides a wide range of high-quality healthcare services to the population of Nottingham and its surrounding communities. When the Trust’s laboratories required a centralised, customisable software system to support their QMS, they chose Q-Pulse.

‘We have two physically separate sites for Clinical Pathology,’ says Tony Hitch, Consultant Clinical Scientist at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust. ‘Both sites needed to be able to share reports, and Clinical Pathology had to comply with Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) UK requirements as well.’

Prior to Q-Pulse’s selection, the Pathology disciplines had maintained separate quality management systems. As a result of ongoing restructuring, the Departments decided to merge the management of quality across the pathology disciplines into one system.

By supporting the management of quality system processes such as Auditing, Document Control and CA/PA Management, Q-Pulse helps pathology laboratories to comply with standards including CPA.

‘We’ve transferred virtually all of our documents into Q-Pulse, which has already helped to reduce the time and effort that we spend managing documents,’ says Tony. ‘Senior staff are now training their own staff to view and search for documents using the system.’

With more than a third of External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes paperless since April 2008, managing these reports and corrective and preventive actions with Q-Pulse is also helping the Department to cut costs in achieving their CPA accreditation by reducing their reliance on paper-based EQA records.

By enabling staff to exchange information easily between departments, Q-Pulse has helped the Department to reduce the time and effort spent managing quality management system information. In addition, Q-Pulse will also support the amalgamated management of quality across Pathology disciplines.
